Comets fall to Alberta No. 1

Posted on February 27, 2014 by Westwind Weekly

In a preview of what could very well be a few playoff finals between now and the provincial championship, the No. 2 Raymond Comets took on the No. 1 Chinook Coyotes last Friday night in Lethbridge.

Both teams were undefeated in league play heading in, with the only loss of any kind between them both belonging to the Comets from a tournament game before Christmas.

Needless to say, something had to give.

Whether home court advantage played a factor is unknown but the Coyotes were able to end on the right side of a defensive, 73-68 win, ensuring the No. 1 spot for at least another week — if not the rest of the season.

Each team had a pair of athletes put up big games offensively, Sunder West’s 27 and Abby Maxwell’s 19 for Raymond slightly out-matched by Chinook’s Kacie Bosch and Katie Keith, who notched 30 and 21 points respectively.

All total, seven Comets hit the scoresheet but it simply wasn’t enough on this night.

The two teams will meet again March 8 in Raymond.

The Comets (8-1), who will next face WR Myers in Taber this coming Friday, wrapped up the first portion of the season with a win over the Magrath Pandas 24 hours after the loss to Chinook.

West’s 23 points led the way in the 70-57 victory, with Makell Hofer adding 12, Haylee Ralph 11 and Jaclyn Heggie 10. Magrath’s Teesha Olson did her best to keep the Pandas in the game, leading all scorers with a solid 25 points.

Skyler Riggin and Megan Anderson each added eight.

Magrath (2-7) had played a few nights earlier against Chinook, losing to the undefeated powerhouse 97-51.  Jocelyn Maxwell led the way for the Pandas against the Coyotes with 14 points, followed by Olson’s 12 and eight from Tana Stewart.

The Pandas will play the second portion of the season in the bottom tier, with its first game Friday night against LCI (3-6).
