Posted on September 10, 2020 by admin

An investigation by Blood Tribe fire and emergency officials is continuing into a large wildland fire on the north end of the Blood Reserve over the weekend.

The Blood Tribe Fire Department was called at approximately 4 p.m. on Saturday to respond to the fire. The burned area was described as six miles west to east and one mile south to north. Blood Tribe Public Works was called to assist for tenders and graders.

“As well as numerous diskers from local farmers, the crews did an exceptional job at detaining the fire building a fire break at Highway 509, pinching the head of the fire and running the flanks with the grass units,” said Jacen Abrey, Blood Tribe Fire Chief, in a news release.

Several surrounding towns assisted in containing the fire including: Fort Macleod, one grass unit; one tender; Coalhurst, one grass unit; one Type 1 engine; Picture Butte, one grass unit; one tender; and Nobleford, one grass unit.

Abrey said the investigation into the cause of the fire should be concluded by the end of the week.
