Magrath and Raymond look to close regular season strong this weekend on the court

Local high school teams are gearing up for the last week of Southern Alberta High School Basketball League play.
The regular season will wrap up March 5, as zone competitions will quickly follow.
In boys regular season play, Magrath continues to lead the way, as the Zeniths hold an impressive 10-0 record in both senior varsity and junior varsity play. The Raymond Comets senior team is 4-6, while the junior squad is 3-7.
The two teams met up on Saturday, as Magrath raced out to a 97-87 win in the senior contest.
The Zeniths took the JV game by a score of 83-70.
On Friday, Raymond had a tougher time against Cardston, as the Cougars rolled to a big 99-71 win. Cardston now sits in second with a 9-1 record. The Comets battled hard in the junior varsity game, as Cardston emerged with a 75-62 victory.
First place in the league will be on the line this week, as Cardston and Magrath will face off on Friday. The Zeniths will then wrap up the regular season with a Saturday game against Medicine Hat, a team that is 4-5 on the year.
Raymond will take on the two city schools this week, starting with a marquee match-up on Friday against Lethbridge Collegiate Institute. On Saturday, the Comets will take on Catholic Central.
LCI is currently third in the standings at 5-5, and Catholic Central is 2-8.
Senior girls league play began Wednesday night, as Raymond took on Chinook (score unavailable at press time).
On Friday, Magrath and Cardston will do battle, while Raymond and LCI will play, as the Comets and Clippers will renew acquaintances.
Saturday will feature Catholic Central and Raymond, along with Medicine Hat and Magrath.
Raymond goes into the final week of play in the driver’s seat in senior and junior varsity. The senior Comets sport a perfect 10-0 record, and the JV team is 9-1. The Magrath Pandas sit in second on the senior circuit at 9-2, while LCI is in second in the JV standings at 8-2. Magrath is 8-3 in JV play.
Last week, Raymond crushed Cardston 85-50 in a Friday-night game. The JV game was also a blowout, as the Comets cruised 70-44.
Magrath also had an easy game Friday, as a senior Pandas routed Catholic Central 84-38. The JV was equally lopsided, as Magrath earned a 59-17 win.
Saturday’s big contests saw the Comets score an empathic 72-54 win over the Pandas in the senior game. The junior contest was a tight affair, as Raymond held on for a 56-50 victory.
