Summer is officially here and Cardston-Siksika MLA Joseph Schow has been busy leading up to the warmer months. One of the bigger initiatives he has employed in the spring and into the summer has been reaching out to constituents to gauge comments and concerns.
“I’m getting the chance to get out and knock on some doors, meet with some constituents, do some town halls, and just really get out and be available in the community. It’s always a bit of a change of pace as I’m used to being in Edmonton and dealing with what’s happening in the legislature, but I get to go back and spend time with the real bosses,” he said.
Due to the pandemic, Schow has had to put meeting people across the riding on the back burner. But with restrictions ended in Alberta, he will be making his way through the vast region over the next several months. With it already started, Schow says he’s heard a number of comments from people across Cardston-Siksika and there’s a wide range of topics being brought forward to the MLA.
“Because it has been so long since I’ve had a chance to do this stuff, it’s almost like laying it out on the table and there are all sorts of issues, but it does vary from place to place. Cardston is very active in trying to get a new hospital, that is something I have been hearing a lot lately. Further north, they’re talking about EMS response times and access to emergency services. I was actually up in Arrowwood doing a town hall a couple of weeks ago and I got some good feedback on that. We talked about the electricity grid and I just left a consultation in Coalhurst about a potential new school and how that works out,” he said. “It’s actually quite a wide swath across the board in what people are interested in. Because my constituency is so vast, the areas are different.”
And while Schow has plenty on tap over the next several months, he’s all excited to get out to some of the bigger events. The biggest of course is the Calgary Stampede, but Schow says he’s excited to hit several rodeos across the riding.
“I’m looking forward to Stampede up in Calgary. I’m going to be up at the Arrowwood Rodeo and I’ll be attending a lot of the rodeos in my neck of the woods. I’m going to take my wife and kids out of town for a couple of days, but I’ll still be spending a lot of my days doing outreach with my constituency and looking forward to connecting with a lot of people.”
