It was a busy week of sports in southern Alberta, as teams from Magrath and Raymond were busy on the field on the court.

On the field, the Raymond Comets dropped Saturday night’s high school football contest 37-0 to the powerful St. Francis Browns from Calgary.

The loss drops Raymond to 1-4 on the season, as the Comets are now ranked No. 9 in the Football Alberta Tier 1 rankings. St. Francis moved up to No. 5 after Saturday’s win in southern Alberta.

That all sets up Football Alberta’s Tier 1 and 2 Game of the Week, as the Medicine Hat Hawks, ranked No. 2 in Tier 2, travel to Raymond on Thursday for a p.m. game at Comets Stadium.

In Southern Alberta Minor Football Association play on Saturday, the Raymond Comets picked up another win. The undefeated Comets defended home field with a big 47-22 win over the Lethbridge Junior Cougars.

Raymond is now 4-0 on the season, with previous wins over the Junior Cougars, the Lethbridge Rams and the Cardston Cougars.

On Monday on the court, The Magrath Zeniths senior boys volleyball team defeated Medicine Hat 25-13, 17-25, 25-17 and 25 -18.

Magrath also won the junior varsity match over Medicine Hat 23-25, 25-13 and 15-10.

On Wednesday, Raymond’s girls volleyball team hosted Picture Butte (results unavailable at press time), while Thursday’s slate will feature the Magrath Pandas visiting Taber for a senior varsity match against St. Mary’s.

Next Tuesday, Raymond will visit Magrath in girls volleyball play, with the junior varsity match set for 6 p.m. and the senior match scheduled for 7:45 p.m.

Next Wednesday, the Zeniths will be in Lethbridge for junior and senior varsity matches against the Winston Churchill High School Bulldogs.
