Magrath will be the home of high school basketball this weekend.
The high school will host a pair of tournaments with games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, as the Heart Breaker Invitational 2022 hits the court.
It all gets underway Thursday, as the boys draw kicks off with four games. The 4 p.m. games include Cardston taking on Foothills Composite and Salisbury Composite on the court against Medicine Hat.
Later on at 8 p.m., Holy Trinity Academy and Catholic Central face off, as the evening’s featured contest will include Lindsay Thursday facing the host Zeniths.
For Magrath, a win in Thursday’s opener would put the boys in the Friday semifinal at 8 p.m. A loss in the Thurber game would see Magrath playing at 8 p.m. Friday in the consolation semifinal.
If all goes well for the home side, the Zeniths will play against on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the championship game.
Other tournament games will include Friday’s championship and consolation semifinals, both of which are set for 4 p.m. Saturday will feature the seventh-place game at 11 a.m. and the third-place game at 3 p.m.
For the Pandas, the girls side of the tournament beings Thursday at 2 p.m. with Raymond against Paul Kane and Salisbury against Medicine Hat.
At 6 p.m. later that day, Cardston and Foothills will do battle, as the Pandas will take on Thurber.
For Magrath, a win over Thurber would push the Pandas into Friday’s 6 p.m. semifinal, while a loss would see the home side play in the consolation semifinal, also at 6 p.m.
The other championship and consolation semifinals are both set for Friday at 2 p.m.
The Heart Breaker championship will be contested Saturday at 5 p.m., while the consolation final is set for 9 a.m.
The seventh-place game will also be played Saturday at 9 a.m., while the battle for third place will be at 3 p.m.
In league games last week involving local teams, the Pandas scored an impressive 91-18 win over Chinook last Wednesday. Magrath also took the JV game, this time by a score of 69-28. Raymond’s girls team also scored a huge win, as the Comets beat Medicine Hat 82-44. The Comets also won in JV play, as Raymond topped Medicine Hat 62-48.
Last Thursday, the Pandas racked up another huge win, as Magrath defeated Catholic Central 95-39. The JV contest was also lopsided, as Magrath took down CCH 76-43.
