Have a ball with Raymond youth volleyball camps

Raymond is holding youth volleyball spring training camps starting Monday. Registration deadline is tomorrow for the camps. The camps run Mar. 4-Apr. 18. The cost is $50 per person.

“We had a group of people in town who just felt there was a need to put more emphasis on the sport of volleyball. We met together, as a group, and decided the best way is to start holding some volleyball camps, getting our coaches trained, and helping to just grow the sport in Raymond,” explained Karen Wilde, fitness and events co-ordinator for the Town of Raymond.

Wilde said there’s a group of volunteer coaches at the ready — who are passionate about the sport and want to improve the skill of Raymond athletes in the sport of volleyball.

“It’s a lot of these volunteer coaches that just have a love of the sport and want to see it grow in Raymond,” she said, adding this is the town’s first shot at organized volleyball camps in the community. “We’re hoping to make it an annual thing we do.”

If the town can get co-operation with community gyms to be able to run a league — that would be the Town of Raymond’s dream, Wilde noted. “To run a youth volleyball league.”

Even as the registration deadline approaches tomorrow and camps start next week, Wilde said if there are residents wanting to register their child in a camp that isn’t already full and if there is space — “we will let them register to participate.”

“We just want to get as many kids playing as we can,” she added.

Here’s a list of the camps being offered:

U13 Girls (2006 and 2007) Monday 6:30-8 p.m. and Friday 3-4:30 p.m. (This camp is full, but there is a waiting list).
U13 Boys (2006 and 2007) Monday 5-6:30 p.m. and Friday 4:30-6 p.m.
U15 Girls (2004 and 2005) Monday 3:30-5 p.m. and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. (This camp is close to being full).
U15 Boys (2004 and 2005) Wednesday 6:30-8 p.m. and Saturday 9-10:30 a.m.
U17 Girls (2003 and 2002) Monday 3:30-5 p.m. and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
U17 Boys (2003 and 2002) Wednesday 6:30-8 p.m. and Saturday 9-10:30 a.m.

“We have great coaches who are trained and have played volleyball at the post-secondary level volunteering their time and it wouldn’t happen without them,” Wilde said.
