Celebrate Seniors with FCSS

Southern Albertans should be celebrating seniors in their communities each and every day — seniors are family, friends and neighbours.

Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is kicking off Seniors’ Week in Alberta June 2-8 with “Celebrate Seniors” at the Coalhurst Community Centre June 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Seniors’ Week is held during the first full week of June. Albertans can show appreciation for Alberta’s seniors and all they contribute to Alberta.

“We have a keynote speaker, Phil Callaway,” said Cindy Lauwen, FCSS volunteer co-ordinator from the Seniors Wellness Program. “And we’re having a roast beef lunch followed by Richard and Deborah Popovich for entertainment in the afternoon,” she added.

Callaway is an award-winning author, speaker and daddy of three. He is the best-selling author of twenty-five books, hosts the daily radio show “Laugh Again” — which airs across North America, the UK and Africa — and he is a frequent guest on national radio and TV.

Richard and Deborah have enjoyed a long and successful career and started their career in the late 1990s. The dynamic duo have recorded five albums and in 1990/91 produced two television seasons (24 episodes) in conjunction with Shaw TV. On an ongoing basis, Richard and Deborah travel throughout Western Canada performing unique, high energy, audience interactive shows with music and clean comedy for all occasions.

Lauwen noted the event will also feature door prizes to be won and information display booths set up. “So people can have a gander at.”

“We just try to keep it a day celebrating seniors. It’s fun, it’s light-hearted, it’s a delicious lunch and lively entertainment in the afternoon,” she said.

Everything for the day, Lauwen added, is only $5 and registration for the event is required. Call 403-915-7063 to register.

“Celebrate Seniors” is a one-stop shop, so to speak, for seniors information. Information display booths this year, Lauwen explained, include the Alzheimer Society, the Canada Revenue Agency, Chinook Life Care, the Government of Alberta with their Seniors Assistance programs and the Lethbridge Elder Abuse Regional Network.

“This is our second year doing a large celebration like this,” she noted. Last year, the event took place in Taber.

With Seniors’ Week and the “Celebrate Seniors” event, Lauwen said it is important to acknowledge all the contributions seniors have made to our communities. “Most of them started our communities and they’re here because we had our seniors and their hard work and all of their accomplishments.”
