Tough end to volleyball season

Local volleyball teams returned home from their respective Alberta Schools Athletic Association provincial tournaments without medals.

Magrath High School’s Pandas visited Fairview for the 2A girls championships, as the team went 3-2 in pool play.

The Pandas split with Spirit River (16–25, 25–27), defeated David Thompson (25–22, 25–20), fell to Rundle College (22–25, 17–25), defeated Onoway High (25–20, 25–19) and earned a win over Fairview School (25–23, 25–19).

That set up a quarterfinal match with Vegreville Composite, which the Pandas dropped 20-25, 16-25, which eliminated Magrath from the competition.

The Pandas roster included Sage Finck, Avery Barrus, Hailey DeWinter, Jennafer Taylor, Brinly Baker,

Madison Cook, Shalisa Heninger, Miranda Strate, Lauren Payne and Britynn Blackmore.

The Magrath Zeniths were in Strathmore for the 3A boys event, which also saw Magrath end pool play with a 3-2 record.

Magrath fell 16–25, 13–25 to Morinville Community High, defeated Strathmore 25–20, 25–22, earned a 25–8, 25–11 win over St. Martin de Porres, defeated St. Paul Regional High School 26–24, 24–26, 15–7 and dropped a 27–25, 23–25, 10–15 decision to Louis St. Laurent.

The Zeniths met Strathcona Christian Academy in the quarterfinals, as Magrath was swept in two straight games, to end the season.

Magrath’s team was comprised of Paycen Blackmore, Levi Gruninger, Samuel Noad, Austin Wocknitz, John Jones, Samuel Payne, Corbin Russell, Isaac Wood, Colton Finck, Jesse Miller, Nathan Noad, Avery Beckstrand, Landon Palmer, Jarett Witbeck and Jack Bennett.
