Locals wrap up play at Alta. Open

A pair of southern Alberta golfers wrapped up the Alberta Open Championship on July 30 in Ponoka.

Magrath’s Paxton Maxwell shot his best score of the three-day event with a round of 73 Thursday to finish at 15-over 228 and in a three-way tie for 44th.

Maxwell had scores of 77 and 78 on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Taber’s Andrew Makarchuk also had his best round Thursday with a 74 for a threeday total of 16-over 229 and a four-way tie for 47th. Makarchuk shot 78 on Tuesday and 77 Wednesday.

Magrath’s Mitch Maxwell was also in the field at Ponoka, but missed the cut for Thursday’s round.

Sheridan hangs on in Magrath

The 2020 Magrath Men’s Open championship was decided by a single shot.

Brett Sheridan took home this year’s honour after a two-day 152, finishing one stroke ahead of Tim Cary and Paxton Maxwell Sunday at the Magrath Golf Club.

Sheridan shot 78 on opening day Saturday and cut that to 74 on Sunday to earn the close win.

Cary posted scores of 77 Saturday and 76 Sunday, while Maxwell shot 79 the first day and closed out with 74 Sunday.
